The enchanting world of 'Folding Screens' compositions

Since I visited the ‘Beyond Folding Screens 2’ exhibition at AmorePacific Museum this spring in Seoul, I have been drawn even more to folding screens. And I say ‘even more’ because before I went to Korea I have already started drawing “Delicate Pink” in the ‘folding screen’ style, which I already talked about in the previous post from the Lines category. The exhibition and other stuff I’ve read and seen on the topic of Asian crafts were just bringing me a step closer, inspiring me, driving me. I don’t take for granted these connections and synchronicities, details I notice, information I stumble upon that just clicks with what I found out before. It’s like follwing a red thread. It is all like a lovely story that unfolds in real time with plot twists, intricate and exciting turn of events and new discoveries.

After the exhibition I guess the idea came to me more vividly. I’ve always been interested in making larger drawings but they are so difficult to complete. Drawing lines on larger pieces of paper and making sense of them all is overwhelming. I have to keep checking the overall balance of the composition which makes the entire process much longer and consuming. (I am still harvesting the drive for completing a 1.5m x 1.5m lines drawing I have started :)) wish me luck with that one).

‘Folding screens’ as I want to call these types of compositions, enable me to split the drawing in frames and makes the entire drawing experience much more pleasant. I can work on individual sections and switch between them when i get stuck and don’t know how to continue.

If you look closely, the above drawing has some repeating elements between the frames. Even though they are separate screens they have a few binding elements. The first element is a thicker stroke at approximately same slope (yet different levels) on each screen(brown - at the bottom part, black - middle section, purple - upper section). The second binding element consists in two lines: a green one that passes from Screen1 to Screen2 and a yellow one that passes from Screen2 to Screen3.

Let us also look from the maths perspective a bit. Who still remembers the transitivity property of parallel lines? 😄 I promise, it really makes even more sense how all screens are connected. Let me recite to you the property: “if line A is parallel to line B and line B is parallel to line C, then line A is parallel to line C.” Similarly I’d like to apply the same property to my 3 screens here. Screen1 is parallel to Screen2, Screen2 is parallel to Screen3, then Screen1 is parallel to Screen3. The Green line connects Screen1 to Screen2, line Yellow connects Screen 2 to Screen3, then of course Screen1 has to be connected to Screen3 too (though no line is seen between the two).

I can’t wait to create more folding screens compositions this coming year. I’ve already cut and prepared some paper for this. I aim for 6 line drawings in 2024.🤞🏽
